Why I am a Star Wars Fan
What gets me excited about Star Wars is not just one thing. It's the story. The effects. The community. And much much more.
George Lucas, the creative mind behind Star Wars, created a whole universe with his expansive story. And since the original first movie the story has expanded not only in terms of content including Prequels and Sequels, shows and novels, new heroes and interesting backstories, but by way of giving characters, places and their gear a believable place in the galaxy far far away. In other words, it feels like it's all real!
As a fan, I get immersed in the world of Star Wars, the adventures of interesting characters, and I am fascinated by stunning places and cool vehicles. I care about heroes and underdogs. I want to join the cause of the Jedi to help bring balance. I want to swing a light saber and pilot a sleek star fighter. I feel right when I wear a tunic. And theme music has become the soundtrack of my life.
Yes, the story is basically pretty simple. But it is also incredibly powerful. And it has taken on multi-dimensionality. It could easily be that we are going through the same struggles and have the same decisions to make as Obi-Wan, Luke, and Rey. Doing good under tough circumstances is not always simply black and white. And like in Star Wars, it's often normal people who are called upon to win the day.
One of my favorite quotes from one of the few SW books I've read.
But let's be honest, it would be a plain if not boring story if it were not for the science fiction setting and all the awesome gear we see in Star Wars. I have to give credit to Lucas for his imagination, for artists, and technicians. One of the successes I believe was that the world of Star Wars looked not perfect but used. All the while ships, weapons, or simple things like buildings are fascinating.
And as much as it feels like one can be transported to a different place and time in Star Wars, we here on this planet have created our own fan space where stories are remembered with toys, non-humanoid forms exist in cosplay, and theories about the origin of the Sith are debated. It still amazes me how many fans there are. You meet them online or recognize them by a smart sticker on their car.
There are many great stories out there that can give us an escape, consider the conundrum of human existence, or offer the hope that we can overcome our inner or global enemies. But to me none are as cool, relatable, and inspiring as the story of Star Wars. I enjoy immersing myself in it in order to find spiritual truths for my real world life.
